The Szevi Foundation (www.szevialapitvany.org) was registered in February 2023.
According to the founding document, the aim of the foundation is to promote a person-centered pedagogical approach. To this end, it supports the operation of an inclusive high school student group called the Rogers Academy (www.rogersakademia.eu) and strives to establish a Hungarian and European person-centered network by involving person-centered individuals and institutions.
The foundation is led by a five-member board that includes founders, teachers, and parents. In addition to their quarterly meetings, we also regularly organize so-called community meetings, where all teachers, board members, and founders discuss strategic issues together.
At Rogers Academy, we work with around 25 students, supported by six main or part-time colleagues. Within the inclusive program, we have students who, for various reasons, have not found their place in traditional or other alternative frameworks: they may be too slow or too fast, struggle with multiple learning disadvantages, have psychological difficulties, or cannot attend a daytime school. Alongside personal learning support for exam preparation, continuous and prioritized development of social competencies is our focus. We invest a lot of energy into community development and ensuring personalized learning pathways based on individual contracts.
The Academy has been operational since September 2012. The design of its educational program has been informed by the previous 10 years of school work and our experience with high school graduation. Between 2004 and 2013, 67 students graduated from the Carl Rogers Primary and Secondary School, from which the Rogers Academy emerged.
The Academy is professionally based on three pillars: firstly, the ideas of Carl Rogers related to learning and teaching; secondly, Mérei's concept of group dynamics; and thirdly, the systems and routines of organizational development define its operation.
Within the foundation, we are working to secure the necessary funding for operations from other sources in addition to parental foundation support (grants, sponsors). So far, we have written a small-scale Erasmus+ grant proposal to support the idea of innovative pedagogy, but our application has not yet received funding.
After the establishment of the foundation's organization, one of our first activities was to initiate the community utilization of a family plot in Érd, which was offered for this purpose. One of our founders donated the plot to the students of Rogers Academy so that the urban plaza living academicians could regularly implement nature-related programs here.
To this end, a yurt was built, and a permaculture program was launched on the plot.
Our grant program includes organizing a series of 3x1 day events.
